New Delhi: Taking the podium in the Central Hall packed with dignitaries, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Union Cabinet, members of Parliament, chief ministers and former President Pratibha Patil, President Droupadi Murmu touched on a range of issues related to tribal communities, sustainable development, the government’s Digital India and Vocal for Local initiatives, as well as its handling of the Covid pandemic.
Born in a Santhal family in Mayurbhanj, Odisha, one of the most backward districts in India, President Murmu grew up in a village where a young girl being able to obtain primary education was still a dream. She, however, beat the odds, going on to become the first person in her village to enrol for college education.
“It is a matter of great satisfaction for me that those who have been deprived for centuries and those who have been denied the benefits of development, those poor, downtrodden, backwards and tribals are seeing their reflection in me,” she said.
