WHETHER it's the avenues awash in twinkling lights, sidewalks scented with evergreens or the buzz of revelers in their festive best, something about New York City at the holidays makes even mundane outings feel magical. No wonder so many travelers-an estimated 7.5 million are expected this holiday season alone-flock here each winter for a dose of the cozy romance found in classic films like "When Harry Met Sally" and "Moonstruck." Alas, life doesn't always look like the movies, and tired tourist traps, eye-popping prices and selfie-stickwielding hordes can leave visitors feeling more like they're stuck on a bad date.
Consider this, then, my New Year's gift to you: an enchanting itinerary of actually romantic strolls, candlelit cocktails, swinging shows and more, all far from the maddening crowds.
Something Sweet The posh Plaza hotel, where Kevin McCallister takes refuge in "Home Alone 2," is hyped for its extravagantand overpriced-high tea.
But canny New Yorkers know the best destination for an über-sophisticated afternoon treat lies farther uptown at Café Sabarsky, a wood-paneled, Viennesestyle kaffeehaus inside the Neue Gallerie art museum.
Reservations are needed after 5 p.m., but earlier seatings are first-come, firstserved. Cozy up in an art nouveau banquette with a few slices of apfelstrudel or Schwarzwälder kirschtorte.
Then keep the glow going with a tour of the Klimts and Schieles upstairs.
