Toronto's Wickens has taken a big step toward driving in IndyCar again

Dreaming of a return

Robert Wickens completed 11 laps in a Formula E car in late June at the Portland International Raceway in the run-up to the 2024 Hankook Portland E-Prix weekend. Wickens was paralyzed six years ago in an IndyCar accident.

Six years after a devastating IndyCar accident left him a paraplegic, Toronto's Robert Wickens drove a single-seat, open-wheel car last month for the first time since his crash, taking a big step forward in his dream of returning to elite racing.

"It felt great," said Wickens, 35, who completed Il laps in a Formula E car in late June at the Portland International Raceway in the runup to the 2024 Hankook Portland E-Prix weekend. "It was only a few laps, but I thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and it left me wanting a lot more. I think right now the goal for me is to try and get onto the grid in Formula E in the future." Wickens' future looked bright when he arrived at his home race now the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy Toronto-as a rookie IndyCar driver back in 2018. He had taken pole position in his first IndyCar start, had eight top-10 finishes in his first Il races, and was sixth overall in championship points.

Fast forward a year and Wickens returned to the Toronto Indy in 2019 in a wheelchair after the August 2018 crash at the Pocono Raceway. IndyCar had gone from his daily life to a far-off dream in an instant.
