Family of Barrie crash victim suing for $3M

The family of a woman who died in a crash that claimed the lives of six young people is suing Barrie and its construction contractors for $3 million due to alleged negligence.

They claim the construction site, with a large utility hole that the car fell into, was unsafe, comparing it to a “an empty 15 foot deep underground swimming pool” installed on a country road without adequate signage.

Haley Marin was 21 when the car she was travelling in struck the side of a 10-metre concrete construction hole, flipped over and fell down the shaft on McKay Road east of County Road 27 in Barrie, according to the statement of claim. Police believed the crash happened around 6 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27, 2022, but the car wasn’t found at the bottom of the hole until 2 a.m. the next day.

Marin died of her injuries, as did Curtis King, 22; River Wells, 23; Jason Ono-O’Connor, 22; Luke West, 22; and Jersey Mitchell, 20.
