Not only is Auston Matthews trying to make history with a 70-goal season, he's plowing down Maple Leafs icons in the process.
Matthews scored No. 67 in the first period Thursday night of the Leafs' 6-5 loss to the New Jersey Devils, passing the legendary Keon for third-most goals with the Leafs with his 366th in blue and white. Sittler is next at 389, Sundin is at 420. If Matthews has a season like this one again next year, he'll pass both.
No. 68 came in the second period, Matthews' 274th at even strength in his career. That moved him past Sundin for the most in Leafs history.
Matthews has three games to get two goals to become the first player since 1992-93 to hit the 70-goal plateau. He extended his goal streak to seven games and his points streak to 13, matching his career highs.
Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe likes that Matthews' goal-scoring pursuit hasn't come at the cost of his all-around game nor the games of his teammates.
"The guys haven't cheated the game, they haven't forced anything," Keefe said. "It just shows the best way if you want to add to your goal total is to just go out and play. Those are good players and they've been dominating play."
Not to be outdone, Leafs captain John Tavares scored twice to tie Phil Kessel for 21st on the all-time Leafs list with 181 goals.
