Veteran forward Garrett Temple, diving for a loose ball Wednesday night against the Knicks, was one of the few Raptors who showed effort in the team's worst home loss in franchise history.
Throughout out the misery of this month- and there is no other way to describe it one of the few things Raptors team officials pointed out was that at least the group played hard.
Sure, they were overmatched every night and the top end of the Toronto rotation comprised about half a dozen guys that may never see an NBA court after this season ends. But they gave their best each night.
So when you hear Darko Rajakovic, as an enthusiastic supporter of his team as there is publicly, start talking about a lack of effort Wednesday night when the Raptors suffered their worst home loss in franchise history, alarms need to go off.
He decried focus and concentration, as he does often, but eyes widened when he talked about effort because that was out of the norm.
"I don't think it's surprising. It's maybe disappointing," he said. "But it's not easy for this group of guys to hold their ground every single night." No, it's not easy and it's unfair to ask a lot of the guys who are being put in untenable position to have their heads beaten in on a nightly basis. The team is mired in a 12-game losing streak.
