The Blue Jays flashed their upside on opening day: elite starting pitching, an efficient bullpen and a top of the lineup that was built to do damage.
José BerrÍos was dominant, three relievers combined to toss three scoreless innings while George Springer, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette registered four hits, including two homers, and four RBIs. Just like how the front office drew it up.
Throughout much of the season opener against the Tampa Bay Rays, it was possible to envision how this group might make a deep run through the regular season and playoffs. Top-tier pitching and solid defence, accompanied by just enough offence to make it all work.
Well, the Jays have showcasing their downside since. Sloppy defence cost them a shot at winning Friday while left-hander Yusei Kikuchi wasn’t very effective in a 5-1 loss Saturday. The Jays’ offence was non-existent in both losses.
If the Jays are going to have a successful year, it will have to be on the backs of their pitching and defence. If they falter, a lack of proficient bats, particularly in the bottom half of the order, figures to be the culprit.
