Whitby Mayor Elizabeth Roy said the province finally announced the new hospital because her community spoke up in an online campaign she launched to apply pressure.
It was a strange end to Whitby Mayor Elizabeth Roy’s public campaign to pressure Premier Doug Ford to finally commit funding to build a new hospital in her rapidly growing town.
Earlier this month, after almost 5,000 constituents had emailed pleas to Ford and his four Durham Region MPPs, and a combative Ford earlier said he would not be “bullied” by Roy, the premier casually confirmed, at a health-related news conference in Oshawa, “in addition, we’re going to build a new Whitby hospital.”
Surprised local reporters pressed him for details. Ontario Health Minister Sylvia Jones stepped up to confirm that, yes, the region’s Lakeridge Health will get a capital planning grant to get the ball rolling on a major new hospital to be built in Whitby within the next decade. “Congratulations!” Jones added.
The abrupt confirmation that Whitby will host Durham’s much-needed new hospital was the culmination of a long public dispute between a local mayor and the provincial premier, suggesting a way other municipalities might successfully fight Queen’s Park.
Roy was not at the public announcement to celebrate, or to ask questions, because the Ford government had not invited or notified her. Somebody who was present relayed the big news to the mayor, who then tuned in to an online video feed of the event.
“I was ecstatic and surprised,” Roy said later in an interview with the Star, adding she isn’t invited to every provincial and federal announcement.
