Shooting victim was making music video, Crown tells trial

Olivier Dundas, 20, was shot near Bloor Street East and Church Street on Jan. 8, 2022.

Olivier Dundas was shooting a music video with two friends on the streets of Toronto in January 2022 when a chance encounter with three other young men they did not know led to the 20-year-old’s life being “needlessly and tragically taken away,” a jury heard Wednesday.

“They were young adults having fun, not looking for a confrontation with anyone,” Crown attorney Rochelle Liberman said in her opening address at the trial for the two men accused in Dundas’ death.

“Unfortunately, while they were out and minding their own business, they were approached aggressively” by three people, she said.

James Galinato, 24, and Jay-Ar Carbonel, 25, have pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder; Liberman did not identify the third individual. Galinato is alleged to have shot Dundas near Bloor and Church streets on the evening of Jan. 8, 2022, while Carbonel was allegedly a party, Liberman told jurors.
