Winston Churchill will soon be scowling once again from the walls of the Chateau Laurier in Ottawa thanks to an international police effort that tracked down the stolen portrait of the former British prime minister to an art collector in Italy.
Ottawa police said Wednesday their investigators will be travelling to Rome later this month to retrieve the famed picture — “The Roaring Lion” — from an Italian citizen who purchased it from a London auction house.
The buyer and the unnamed auction house were both apparently unaware the picture — taken in 1941 by renowned Canadian photographer Yousuf Karsh — was stolen from the luxury hotel more than two years ago as part of what appeared to be a professional heist.
A print of this Winston Churchill portrait by Yousuf Karsh was taken from Ottawa's Chateau Laurier in late 2021 or early 2022 while the hotel was closed during the pandemic.
Police also announced Wednesday that, back in April, they arrested the suspected thief — a 43-year-old man from Powassan, Ont., a town of a few thousand people about 330 kilometres north of Toronto.
“With the help of public tips, forensic analysis, and international co-operation, investigators tracked down the individual responsible for the theft,” police said in a news release.
