Police investigating the death of a prominent Markham realtor announced Wednesday they have a suspect — and that he may have left the country.
A Canada-wide warrant has been issued for the arrest of 47-year-old Zhixiong Marko Hu, of Markham, on a charge of first-degree murder, York Regional Police said.
Hu is wanted in the killing of realtor Yuk-Ying (Anita) Mui. The 56-year-old woman’s high-profile disappearance and death earlier this month have shaken the many who knew and worked with her, and the wider region that has seen many types of violent crime double in the last year.
Although the warrant for the newly named suspect is Canada-wide, the hunt may be broader.
Const. James Dickson told the Star that investigators are working with the Canada Border Services Agency.
“We do believe that he could have left Canada,” Dickson said. “There is a belief that he would have had the means to be able to flee the country.”
He said police have tried other means to locate Hu without success.
Wednesday, at a Markham address registered to Hu, the name of a construction business on the door appeared to have been altered, with the identifying portions removed. A man at the building identified Hu as a general contractor in the home construction and renovation industry.
Mui, a realtor with Century 21 Atria, was last seen leaving her home in Markham around 9:30 a.m. on Aug. 9.
A colleague told the Star that one of her two adult sons last spoke with her around 11 a.m., but could not reach her after that.
