OM System OM-5

The OM System OM-5 is the second new camera under OM Digital Solutions, the company formed after Olympus sold its imaging division. The OM-5 sits neatly as a replacement for the Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark III, but with several updates that make it an even more appealing camera. Priced at £1,199 body only, it sits above the E-M10 range and offers an IP53 weather-sealed body, making it an ideal choice for those who want to travel light and not worry about the weather.

It’s worth remembering that the E-M5 has always been Olympus’s mid-range, lightweight, but the high-speed weather-sealed camera. This puts the new OM-5 up against the likes of the Canon EOS R7 (30fps, £1,350 body, weather-sealed), Fujifilm X-T4 (30fps cropped, £1,549 body, weather-sealed), and Sony Alpha A6600 (11fps, £1,450 body only, weather-sealed).

Features The OM-5 uses the same 20MP sensor as the E-M5 Mark III, with a sensitivity range covering ISO 200-6400, which can be extended down to ISO 64 and up to ISO 25,600. The OM-5 also has a very similar camera body and control system as the E-M5 Mark III. However, it gains improved IP53 weather-sealing and enhanced in-body image stabilisation that’s rated for 6.5 stops, or 7.5 stops with lenses that support Sync IS.

You also get the TruePix IX processor inherited from the Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark III, which brings an array of extra features. These include Handheld Hi-Res Multi-shot, which gives 50MP images, and built-in LiveND up to four stops (ND16).

Fast shutter speeds are available, with up to 1/8000sec using the mechanical shutter, or 1/32,000sec using the electronic shutter.
