I love this picture. Unfortunately, to explain why I love it will involve me coming over as a grumpy old man, so buckle up! I’m in my 60s, and in my early teens I fell
in love with photography. The image that made me fall in love was ‘Migrant Mother’ by Dorothea Lange. I never realised that raw emotion could be such an integral part of a photograph that it reduced me to tears. I devoured photography… studied the greats, discovered new heroes and heroines; I became obsessed with the great LIFE magazine, National Geographic, the Sunday colour supplements: the amazing Observer Magazine and Sunday Times Magazine, whose art department headed by Bruce Bernard and Michael Rand did so much for the advancement of British photography.
