Asian Photography|March 2024
In the world of photography, where every snapshot tells a story and every image holds a memory, certain genres stand out for their deeply personal and intimate nature. Among these, maternity and newborn photography offer a unique glimpse into the moments of joy, anticipation, and the tender beginnings of new life. In this exclusive interview, we delve into the creative heart and mind of Tarveen Kalsi, who has not only mastered the art of preserving precious moments, but has also navigated the complexities of building trust with her clients during some of their most vulnerable times.

A LENS ON NEW LIFE

What inspired the start of your photography journey, and what drew you to your particular genre?

Though I’ve been creatively inclined from the start, I pursued a B. Pharm in grad followed by an MBA. Basically I chose paths that led me away from any creative field. But the year 2015 changed it all. In 2015 I happened to click a friend’s maternity announcement picture just because my husband had a DSLR. I took a quick crash course from my husband on how to use the DSLR and I did a small shoot for her. She had a good fan following on Facebook and looking at those images a few of her colleagues asked her if I could do a shoot for them. I did such referral shoots for almost three months and then got my first paid professional assignment through the Facebook business page that I had reluctantly created. And then there was no looking back. Before Looney lens I used my creative focus towards doing up spaces, fabrics, outfits, how colours play, interior decor etc. Photography gave me a space to put together all my creative areas of interest into that one single frame. Even today, I enjoy putting together the outfits, the themes, sets, props and settings as much as the proverbial final “Click”. My specialisation is putting together all of this into that one frame towards creating moving memories.

Maternity and newborn photography are incredibly intimate and personal. How do you build trust and comfort with your clients during these shoots?
