It's easy to shy away from outdoor portrait photography. On the surface, it doesn't seem very accessible: you need a willing model, super-fast lenses and all manner of lighting equipment, right? But portrait photography can be more accessible than you think.
Sure, you can't get around the need to source a model, but family and friends will often be happy to sit for you. And failing that, there are plenty of portrait groups out there that share the price of hiring a professional model or two. And while we'd all love to be able to afford a high-end fast portrait prime, you can pick up some really affordable f/1.8 primes, such as the superb Viltrox 85mm f/1.8, that will stand you in good stead.
Best of all, you don't need to find a beauty spot or dramatic location for your outdoor portrait session. Whether you're based in an urban or rural setting, there are likely to be hundreds of potential locations right on your doorstep.
In this issue's Crash Course we'll tell you what kit you should prioritise, which camera settings to use, how to find a good location, and some tips for making the most of natural light. We shot with modelling duo @connor_and_jessica, who cycled through poses without needing prompts and even suggested costume changes. Working with pro models is a great way to improve your portraiture skills, as they'll bring their experience to the shoot and will be able to offer advice, allowing you to focus on your composition and settings.
CAMERA KIT
FOR EVERY BUDGET
You don't need expensive kit to capture jaw-dropping portraits. Fast autofocus is helpful - but not essential - and although fast lenses give the best bokeh-filled backgrounds, there are lots of good-value f/1.8 primes.
