On just five occasions has a rider won Liège-BastogneLiège and the Giro d'Italia in the same season. The riders with this on their palmarès include two legends of the sport, Eddy Merckx (1972 and 1973) and Bernard Hinault (1980).
Tadej Pogačar now hopes to follow in their wheel-tracks. The UAE Team Emirates rider is the overwhelming favourite for the Giro, which begins on 4 May in Turin. He has raced just 10 days this season, and taken seven wins, the latest of which was at Liège last Sunday.
