DAVE Challinor has urged his Stockport side to become record breakers after their 12th consecutive league win.
The Hatters had to dig deep to see off Colchester, but victory saw them equal a record for consecutive wins in the fourth tier set by Luton Town in 2002.
Kyle Wootton put County ahead on the stroke of halftime and substitute Callum Camps added a second immediately after the break.
County narrowly missed out on promotion to League One last season, falling at the final hurdle in a play-off final penalty shootout defeat.
Against Colchester, they cemented their place at the top of the table, moving six points clear of Mansfield in second.
“The important thing is now that we have the opportunity to break a record in a week,” Challinor said.
“I look further in terms of the record for most consecutive wins ever in the football league. We weren’t at our best today, but we found a way which is pleasing.
“I spoke in the sponsors’ lounge before the game and there is an expectancy to win easily, but that’s never the case. You’ve got to earn the right.
