When the 22-year-old was a scholar at Watford, it so happens that Duncan was his head of education.
Their paths hadn’t crossed since McKiernan left in the summer of 2023, with the midfielder moving on to, first, Morecambe and then the Imps.
It was while he was on international duty with Northern Ireland U21s in Luxembourg that Duncan’s message arrived.
“I got a text off him saying ‘see you in two weeks’ and I thought ‘what’s going on, is he going to come up to watch a game?’,” McKiernan told The FLP. “I wasn’t really in the loop so I had a google. I saw we had Chesham in the FA Cup and put two and two together. It will be good to see him – but hopefully we can go further in the competition!”
There’s sure to be a cracking atmosphere at The Meadow tomorrow night as the Generals, settling well into life in National League South, welcome Lincoln.
Last term’s Southern Premier South champions will be out to cause a major shock, but McKiernan, for one, won’t be taking anything for granted in Buckinghamshire.
