Japanese star gives Cov new dimension

WHEN Tatsuhiro Sakamoto arrived at Coventry City from KV Oostende in the summer, Mark Robins had not fielded an orthodox winger for the best part of three years.

Japanese star gives Cov new dimension

It did not take long for that to change. The Japanese international performed capably at wing-back, in central midfield, as a floating No.10 and even in the solitary game he spent as a centre-forward.

Yet it quickly became obvious that Sakamoto was at his most dangerous when he drifted into wide areas, using his explosive pace, skillful dribbling, and incredible agility to create goalscoring chances.

Robins ditched his trusted 3-41-2 system, deployed Sakamoto on the right of a 4-4-1-1, and the 27-year-old burst into life.

The ‘Superstar from Tokyo’ has scored five goals in his last four Championship matches and six since November 25. He is - or should be - a shoo-in for the December player of the month award.

“What you’re seeing is the confidence coming through,” said Robins after Sakamoto’s second brace in the space of a week downed Middlesbrough on New Year’s Day.

“That’s what we’ve been waiting for. He’s always had the ability. He’s technically brilliant, his pass, vision, execution and he’s got goals in him. He creates as well. Now he’s got that confidence and belief too.”
