REGAN Linney’s first goal of the season earned a point for Altrincham in an ill-tempered, but entertaining Greater Manchester derby against Oldham, that leaves the expectant title challengers four without a win to continue their stuttering start to the season.

The Latics had taken the lead through striker James Norwood, and missed several other glorious chances, but couldn’t seal the win as Ethan Ross pulled off a string of fine saves for the Robins.

“We could’ve quite easily come away from three points today instead of one,” said frustrated Oldham boss Micky Mellon. “We’ve been guilty of missing a few in recent weeks, and to get those chances again today and not take them is disappointing.

“It looked like it was turning into a good solid away performance without much danger, but then to concede a goal like we did from a set-piece is disappointing.

“But we only have ourselves to blame, you cannot miss chances like we did and win football matches, it’s as simple as that.”
