Colchester started much the quicker, belying their lowly league position with a try inside 53 seconds scored by centre Jacob Bodkin.

But Bury struck back with their first significant attack, with open-side Ewan Guy crossing after the ball was recycled left from a scrum after a knock-on.

Colchester No.8 Ashton Webb dived over after a patient build-up by the forwards and backs, before scores by scrum-half Will Metcalfe and winger Ewan Rees took the visitors into a 12-15 lead.
