NFC IN THE IPHONE
Near-field communication (NFC) technology has been a cornerstone of mobile payments and contactless interactions for years. Apple's introduction of Apple Pay in 2014 marked a significant milestone in making NFC technology accessible to millions of users worldwide. Apple Pay allows users to make secure payments with just a tap of their iPhone using the NFC chip embedded in the device. Since its launch, more than 500 million people have used Apple Pay, which is on the rise every week.
However, until recently, Apple's control over NFC functionality on its devices was tightly regulated. Third-party developers were limited to using NFC for reading tags, while Apple Pay remained the sole method for contactless payments and transactions. This approach ensured high security and privacy but limited the potential for innovation and integration with other apps and services. With the launch of iOS 18.1, Apple is opening up new possibilities for developers by allowing them to offer NFC contactless transactions within their apps using the Secure Element. This update represents a shift in Apple's approach to NFC technology and will likely have far-reaching implications for the ecosystem.
