Experiential Tourism
Abhimanyu Alsisar
HOTELIER AND CO-ORGANISER OF MAGNETIC FIELDS FESTIVAL
How would you define experiential tourism?
For me, experiential tourism is the future of travel. It is something that you create and share with people where they have to be there to experience and know what is happening; no photographs or videos do justice to it. With Magnetic Fields, I have tried to create an experience featuring contemporary art and music which people fly in from all parts of the world.
How do you ensure that experiential initiatives respect and preserve local cultures and traditions?
Experiences [in Alsisar] are created keeping in mind indigenous living, food, and architecture as the main theme. One can package them differently, but my main aim remains to be able to preserve this heritage. The experiences that I offer revolve around local handicrafts, art, music, and instruments. At Magnetic Fields, along with techno-electronic music, there is also folk music and Magnetic Words, which is a book-reading session. If you are selling experiential tourism in India or anywhere else and you are not using your culture, you are not doing justice to your country.
How does the local community contribute to this?
