Sadly, your feet aren't exempt from the natural tendency for age to take its toll. As you get older, you become more prone to aches and pains in your feet, clawing of the toes and general problems with your circulation.
Along with regular exercise, the right footwear can go a long way towards warding off ageing of the feet. That doesn't mean slippers - while these may be comfortable, they're more likely to make you shuffle and not keep your joints in shape. Plus, slippers don't have the sort of padded insoles you need to protect your feet from impact as you walk.
For everyday, well-fitted trainers with good cushioned insoles are ideal. Check the fit to make sure they support the arch of your foot. Lace-up trainers, or those with a Velcro strap, will hold the heel in place. However, make sure they're not too tight.
For special occasions, don't opt for ballet-style pumps, as these don't provide arch support and have little shock-absorption. At the other extreme, high heels force your foot forward and can change your posture, making you prone to back as well as foot pain. Kitten heels look elegant as well as being comfortable - if you have wide feet or bunions, try a specially-designed brand like Sole Bliss.
The downside to trainers is that they can make your feet hot and sweaty, leaving you prone to the fungal infection athlete's foot. Along with itching, it can lead to painful cracks in the skin under or between your toes, a white flaking rash and a cheesy smell.
Fungal infection of your toenails also becomes more common with age. It often starts on one toenail, with thickening and crumbling of the nail. Although the nail may look unsightly and be discoloured, it doesn't usually cause pain or itching. It can be caused by the spread of fungal infection from athlete's foot.
