Dear NZ Woman's Weekly, happy birthday. I can't imagine what it feels like to be 90. When we met, you were a mere 50. How the years have, as they say, flown. Though it isn't always good manners to go on too much about someone's age, especially when, like yours, it's rather a great age. And great in more ways than one, of course.

You remind me of my mother, old and wise, and full of stories and recipes. And possessed of a positive spirit, which is the secret of your long and vigorous life, as it was of my mother's. Mum never liked to dwell on the negative side of life and neither do you, which is something your readers probably valued from the get-go back in 1932, when the world was a rather different place.
