Fans watching Julianne Moore in her twisty-turny new thriller Sharper might just find themselves wondering if there’s something a little different about the star’s performance this time around.
The answer is simple: the flame-haired actress is packing heat – something she hasn’t done on screen for 16 years. Don’t get her wrong – Julianne, 62, is as committed to her anti-gun crusade as she’s always been.
For this movie, however, she says she made an exception to her “no guns” rule because, without wanting to give too much away, her use of the weapon in Sharper is far from gung-ho. Instead, it seems more like a moral tale given how pear-shaped everything goes once the trigger is pulled.
Most of the world knows Julianne simply as the star of movies like Boogie Nights, Still Alice and A Single Man, but behind the scenes the mum-of-two has been fighting for gun safety in the US for almost two decades and up until now hasn’t held a fi rearm on screen since 2007.
It was in 2012, after the Sandy Hook School massacre in the US state of Connecticut, that she felt compelled to take her fight to the next level.
In the December 14 mass shooting, 20 children, mostly aged six and seven, were killed when a lone gunman opened fire at the school. During the attack, he also took the lives of six staff members.
