Tina's trials 'I JUST WANTED TO BE LOVED'

Not long before she died, Tina Turner revealed the advice she would give her younger self.

“I would tell myself to stay strong and continue wanting more and fighting for it all,” she smiled. “It will come – and it will be worth the wait!”

At a young age, Tina proved she was a survivor. Born Anna Mae Bullock in a windowless basement in Tennessee, her early life was blighted by poverty and family violence.

As a teenager making her way in the entertainment world, she fared little better: her marriage to her first husband Ike Turner might have launched her music career, but behind the scenes she paid a huge price.

The violence was relentless. Whether she had a black eye or a broken jaw, Ike always forced her to go on stage.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS

1966 RIVER DEEP

River Deep - Mountain High was one of Tina and Ike's biggest hits. It flopped in the US, but it went to number three in the UK and before long they were supporting The Rolling Stones on their 1969 US tour.

1985 MAD MAX

Tina became a legend Down Under in 1985, making her feature movie debut playing Aunty Entity opposite Mel Gibson in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, and also recording the film's anthemic song We Don't Need Another Hero.
