cool coastal shades
Capture an oceanic feel with a palette of breezy blues, soft whites and driftwood tones
LIGHTEN THE MOOD Light and airy rooms are key to nailing this look, whether whitewashed walls, painted panelling, blond wood floors or polished stone that create a calming, restful backdrop. Maximise natural daylight with windows, skylights and glazed doors left uncovered or lightly dressed with floaty voiles and simple cotton sheers.
KEEP COLOURS CALM Cool coastal blues are a mainstay of this scheme, from soft powder blue and denim to bolder sea blues and navy, set against crisp, fresh white. Warm up these cooler tones with soft neutrals in pebble grey, sand and stone or introduce a few bright accents to make your scheme pop, such as warm coral or sunny yellow.
WORK IN TEXTURES Bring a palette of breezy blues to life by working in plenty of textural details and natural elements. Think woven wicker, seagrass and jute for furniture, rugs and lighting, teamed with weathered planks and gnarly driftwood pieces. Mix in metallic accents to add contrast in galvanised steel, burnished brass or rusted metal.
TAKE IT EASY Keep the look relaxed with furnishings in natural materials, from faded linen and bleached cottons to soft chambray and ticking canvas. While stripes are key to coastal style, avoid kitsch ‘nautical’ motifs like sailboats and anchors and go for swirly abstracts and soft patterns with pretty coral and shell-inspired prints.
