The Story So Far
After taking a salon job on a cruise ship headed for Cape Town, MAGGIE WILKINS decides to combine her trip with a visit to her father's sister - her aunt HANNAH FOSTER.
Hannah has been made redundant from her job at the library. Without her income, she and her stepson SIMON will have to find a new way to make a living.
Simon is a woodcarver, but hasn't sold much of his work yet.
Maggie and Simon befriend JEFF, the son of Hannah's neighbour CONNOR HAMMOND.
Jeff is keen to go surfing with Simon, but Hannah is unhappy at the thought of her stepson out on the water, as his father ROBERT was lost at sea.
To help with expenses, Connor suggests that Hannah might take in a lodger, but Hannah's family suggest opening a backpackers' lodge might suit her better.
After her workaholic fiancé DEAN BULLER, an international banker, extends his three-week business trip to the US, Maggie decides to stay in South Africa a little longer and help set up the new business...
PERFECT," Maggie breathed. "You've outdone yourself, Simon!"
Simon grinned, holding the big wooden sign proclaiming HANNAH'S HOUSE in elegant lettering.
Below, in smaller writing, were the words Backpackers welcome.
“Not too bad,” Jeff said. You even remembered the apostrophe.
“D’you think I’d let him forget that?” Hannah smiled. It’s really beautiful, and very eye-catching. Thanks so much, my boy.”
“Now to hang it,” Simon said. It’s got to be right at the gate so people spot it as they pass.”
“I'll give you a hand,” Jeff said. Bring some nails.”
The boys disappeared into the garden.
“I hope this works, Maggie. What if nobody comes?” Hannah sighed.
