They clocked him the minute he walked into the supermarket.
‘Nice arms,’ Cheryl said, eyeing his tight T-shirt.
‘Nice bottom,’ Pat sighed, sizing up his tight jeans.
‘I really like those trainers,’ Sandra added. The other two gave her a pitying glance.
In theory, Sandra should have been the only one on checkout duty at that quiet time of the morning. Cheryl was supposed to have been on shelves, and Pat should have been in the coffee shop.
Only, Cheryl and Pat had ambled over to stand around Sandra’s till, chatting about what they’d got up to last weekend and what they hoped to get up to next weekend. Until he had walked in.
Totally smitten, they watched as he made his way around the aisles, choosing his items and dropping them into the basket slung carelessly over one of those arms Cheryl had admired so much. And then it struck them…
‘He’s coming here!’ Pat hissed. ‘Well, yeah,’ Sandra said, slow as ever on the uptake.
‘He’s got to pay for his stuff. Where else could he go?’
‘Quick!’ Cheryl vaulted into the chair at the till on Sandra’s left. Pat raced round to the till on Sandra’s right. Both girls feverishly tapped in the codes they needed to unlock their machines and make them available for service.
‘But you’re not even on…’ Sandra began, and then the penny dropped. Pat and Cheryl were sitting bolt upright and smiling broadly, welcomingly, pictures of eager assistance.
‘Bet I can get his phone number,’ Cheryl said out of the side of her mouth, eyes fixed on the approaching target.
‘Bet I can get his house number,’ Pat countered.
