Going away? Not only is it essential to pack your passport, but your toothbrush should be next on the list. Good oral health is important all year round, but the summer months can bring particular challenges - even when staying at home. Hot weather, cold drinks and food, plus sugary, ice-filled cocktails, can have a negative impact on teeth and even cause bad breath - which is the last thing you want when enjoying yourself. Here's what you need to know.
Get the temp right
Tooth sensitivity affects women more than men, and can make summer treats, such as ice cream and iced drinks, hard to enjoy. 'If your teeth are already sensitive, this can create a very painful sensation,' says Dr Yasmin Anaboussi of L&Y Dental.
In most cases, sensitivity occurs around the neck of the tooth where the gum has receded. 'As this area isn't covered by hard enamel, the underlying tissue - called dentine, can become exposed,' adds Neil Sikka, chief dental officer at Bupa. 'Dentine is sensitive to touch and temperature, as it has millions of tiny tubes that transport stimulus to the nerve.' Sensitivity can also occur in cracked teeth and around loose or leaking fillings, so see your dentist for regular check-ups.
You can help ease tooth sensitivity by switching to a toothpaste formulated specifically for sensitive teeth. 'Look for the ingredient potassium nitrate, which helps rebuild and restore enamel and forms a protective layer over the dentine,' says Neil. 'With regular use, you should find that your sensitivity starts to settle down.'
