It seems a curious choice for a quasi-royal tour. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have chosen to visit Nigeria, after being invited by the chief of defence staff, who met them at last year’s Invictus Games in Germany.
The vibe is very Games-related: meetings with Nigerian officials and athletes to highlight the country’s commitment to Harry’s Paralympics-style competition for injured and sick military personnel and veterans.
It’s all very Sussex territory, though: promoting mental health awareness, military rehabilitation centres and ‘cultural events’ to advocate ‘inclusivity’.
But… Meghan and Harry, haven’t you forgotten something? You’re no longer anything to do with the Commonwealth. You ‘stepped back’ from royal duties, remember?
What are you doing swanning around the joint like you own it?
The King, when he was still Prince of Wales, visited Nigeria four times. The last time, in 2018, he delighted crowds with a speech partly in pidgin.
To be fair to Meghan, she did recently reveal that she’d done a genealogy test and was ‘43% Nigerian’, and the Invictus Games is one of the best things Harry has ever done.
Nigeria entered for the first time last year and has expressed an interest in hosting the competition at some point.
