Winter is a great time to visit Germany's capital

48 HOURS IN BERLIN

For historic landmarks and a vibrant cultural scene, Berlin is a joy to visit at any time but go in winter and you’ll beat the crowds.  Whether you’re sipping hot schokolade in a cosy cafe, exploring museums without the queues or walking by a frost-spangled lake, the city has heaps to offer in the chilly season. Plus, with lower fares and hotel rates, you’ll get more value for money.

Pack your thermals as temperatures can plunge below freezing. With luck, you’ll see the city transform into a winter wonderland as the snow begins to fall. And you’ll find the public transport is super efficient, even when it snows!

SEE THE SIGHTS

Jump on the U5 subway line for a tour of some of the major sights. Must-sees include the iconic Brandenburg Gate (subway: Brandenburger Tor) and the imposing parliament building, the Reichstag (subway: Bundestag). It’s worth a visit if only to experience its glittering glass dome and roof terrace, which boasts fantastic city views (admission is free but you need to register and book ahead: bundestag.de).
