I don’t want to leave him everything
Q I remarried and brought a lot of money into my second marriage. My husband had no savings and has never worked much. We’re making our wills and, although I want him to be comfortable, I’d also like my money to go to my children. As my husband, the money legally goes to him but I don’t want him to spend it all and leave them with nothing. I want to talk to him but don’t know how. Lorraine, Guildford
A I wonder what’s holding you back from having the conversation? Are you worried he’ll think you don’t trust him to spend wisely? One way to tackle this is to ask him how he sees the money being distributed when either of you dies, and hear if he’s thinking in the same way as you. He’ll be aware you brought the money into the relationship. Another way is to involve a solicitor in making your wills. This may cost a little but it will offer you a space to share your concerns and for them to explain the legal position. They can also be there to help you discuss this with your husband.
