I made myself scrambled eggs for Sunday breakfast, accompanied by a toasted sourdough English muffin from the farmers’ market and my favourite coffee in my favourite mug.
I had the latest Richard Osman to read, so afterwards, and still in my PJs, I hunkered down on the sofa with yet more coffee and Gregory Porter serenading me in the background.
In the afternoon, I planned to pull on my walking gear and do a circuit of the common. I might even invite Gregory along for company, via my new headphones.
A perfect Sunday, the sort I could only have dreamt of back when Ella was a rambunctious toddler, the laundry basket was overflowing and I had an hour to make roast beef with all the trimmings, before my in-laws rocked up and hijacked the day.
Be careful what you wish for! Isn’t that what they say? Because your perfect Sunday may not be quite as perfect as you hoped. Especially when you’re only 46 and you have a lifetime of solo weekends ahead of you – Sunday after Sunday after Sunday…
I abandoned my book and went back to bed, the best place to have a little cry, with a side order of self-pity. I even ate some emergency chocolate, which didn’t help in the slightest. It just made me feel greedy, needy and pathetic. This would not do!
After our divorce, Martin joined a salsa class and met Jane… within a year. I was that easy to replace! I kept my bitterness to myself, even when Ella told me that Jane ‘was quite nice, I suppose’.
Our marriage had run out of steam, and I didn’t begrudge my ex-husband his second chance at happiness.
