INSOMNIA
Struggling with falling asleep or staying asleep is known as insomnia, and around a third of us will experience it in our lives. Sufferers can wake up during the night, wake up unusually early in the morning, and feel tired and drained during the day. Stress is thought to be one of the major causes of this sleep disruption, but it is also associated with mental-health problems such as depression, anxiety and psychosis, and with underlying medical conditions ranging from lung problems to hormone imbalances. Management of insomnia generally involves improving 'sleep hygiene' by sticking to regular sleep patterns, avoiding caffeine in the evening, and keeping the bedroom free from light and noise at night.
