The beginning of 2022 saw us come out of the throes of COVID-19 lockdowns, but into an uncertain political climate, turbulent economic times, and then the death of our beloved monarch. In tough periods, we often look to those in the public eye for support and inspiration, and thanks to these leading figures, the past year has also held a lot of moments to celebrate. Here, woman&home rounds up our heroes, who've inspired us to show courage in the face of adversity.
QUEEN ELIZABETH II
In June, we came together to celebrate the Queen's Platinum Jubilee and to honour her remarkable achievements as Britain's longest-reigning monarch. Then, just months later, we joined one another in mourning and grief as the country and Commonwealth lost our steadfast sovereign when she passed away aged 96. She promised to devote her whole life - whether long or short - to us in service, and it's safe to say that she did just that. Rest in peace, Your Majesty.
PRINCESS ANNE
The Queen's 72-year-old daughter deserves special recognition this year. After being by her mother's bedside during her final moments, Anne, the Princess Royal, steadfastly accompanied her mother's coffin on the final journey from Balmoral to London. Describing her actions as 'an honour and a privilege', the princess later joined her brothers for a vigil while the Queen was Lyingin-State, as well as walking with them behind her mother's coffin at the state funeral.
DAVINA MCCALL
Gone are the days when women dealt with debilitating menopausal symptoms quietly behind closed doors, and it's partly thanks to celebrities like Davina McCall have helped to break down that stigma. Following her documentary on the subject, Davina, 55, has continued her campaign to raise awareness, releasing a self-help book for women.
