For Norwegians, walking everywhere, whether it’s to a market or through a park, is a way of life. Now, a study in the European Heart Journal shows picking up the pace as you walk for as little as 20 minutes a week lowers your risk of serious heart trouble by 40%. Speeding up (even for only a few minutes at a time) reduces blood pressure, inflammation and levels of bad fats. This keeps your heart in top shape.

OR SIP H2O! A cool glass of water does more than help you beat the heat: A National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute study linked sipping 6 to 8 cups of hydrating beverages daily to a significantly lower risk of heart trouble. 

Dodge diabetes with a gardening break

Happy news for people who love gardening, like Norwegians do: The hobby wards off type 2 diabetes. A new Penn State study shows that 22 minutes a day of gardening reduces your risk of developing the disease by 49%. While you may not notice it because you’re enjoying yourself, caring for plants keeps your weight down and builds muscle, which balances blood sugar to ward off diabetes.
