Back in the 1960s, I worked at JL Hudson Company in downtown Detroit and relied on public bus transportation to get to and from work, which required me to transfer buses along the way. One day, we were let out of work a half hour earlier than normal due to an impending storm. All went well with my first bus.
I got on the Woodward bus and got off at Holbrook to wait for my connecting bus. I waited and waited, but the bus didn’t come. I was very nervous as I was the only person at the bus stop. Suddenly, I noticed a car full of young men approaching. The car slowed, then stopped, and the men asked if I needed a ride.
I ignored them and did not respond. But I moved out of the bus shelter and stood closer to the road so if someone tried to kidnap me, I could run into oncoming traffic and flag down a driver.
