Meir Kay was walking down a street in New York City one frigid winter day in 2017, when he saw a man who was living in a cardboard box.
How heartbreaking, the then-29-year-old thought. The poor guy must be freezing.
Walking over to him, Meir asked the man, “Can I get you anything? A meal maybe?”
“I don’t want food. I don’t want a drink. I don’t want money. I just want to talk to someone,” the man replied.
Still, Meir treated the man to a meal, then sat down and talked to him. He asked his name and listened as the man shared about his life, including his struggles with loneliness and isolation.
The man was so grateful to simply be seen and heard. Meir realized just how important human connection is for everyone…and he got an idea.
Super Bowl Sunday was coming up. People gather with family and friends for this unofficial American holiday, Meir thought. Why not use football to connect people in need?
A winning idea
Meir found a venue willing to welcome his special guests to watch the Super Bowl. He bought some football T-shirts, and a few hours before game kickoff, Meir hit the streets to invite people to his party.
