The short list

Haglöfs L.I.M Intense Trail 2-in-1 Shorts (£170, haglofs.com/en)

These shorts are costly but we’re afraid they’re quite simply head and shoulders (and legs!) above anything else we’ve tried lately. Plus, register as a member of the Haglöfs website and you can get them for £119. Designed for mountain running, they have pockets galore – two phone pockets on the inner ‘cycling’ shorts layer; a waistband with a stretch back pocket (e.g. for gels) and hook (e.g. for keys), all of which is perforated so that you don’t get a sweaty midriff!

We love that this can negate the need for an additional waist pack, unless you need a hydro pack or vest. But perhaps the best thing about these shorts is the careful consideration of the dual layers. The inner, tighter shorts have silicone grippers on the hems which means that they don’t ride up at all when you run – no more inner thigh rub! They’re super comfy, too – not overly tight and compressive as some cycling-style shorts can be. The outer, looser shorts are bright, with reflective elements for extra visibility, plus lightweight for fast drying and unrestricted movement – just what you need when running over undulating terrain.
