Gun violence has become a global human rights issue because it threatens our most fundamental human right — the right to life. It is estimated that more than 500 people die every day because of violence committed with firearms. Emma González is a young activist whose organizing work and voice has been an immeasurable contribution to the world in understanding the deep grief and consequences caused by gun violence. TIME magazine named her one of its ‘100 Most Influential People.’
Emma González was born on 11 November 1999 to math tutor Beth Gonzalez and cyber security lawyer Jose Gonzalez. Her parents were immigrants from Cuba who came to New York City in 1968. Emma grew up in Parkland, Florida, with two older siblings. She graduated from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida.
