Not two months ago, Giorgio Armani held his runway show at Milan Fashion Week and was met with silence. The show was held at an empty theater as Italy faced the largest outbreak of the coronavirus outside of Asia. 
Spring has always been a season of exuberance and bright colors, especially in the world of fashion. It goes without saying that this year’s spring/summer season has been overshadowed by the global epidemic  we’re facing. And it is only right that we substitute our enthusiasm for vigilance at this time.

As the new year settles in, we find ourselves at a crossroads of inspiration, transformation, and fresh beginnings—a theme that resonates deeply throughout this issue.
On our cover, we’re delighted to feature our longtime friend, Hamish Daud. Remarkably, this is his first time gracing our cover. In our conversation, Hamish reflects on his evolving roles—from creative pursuits to the joys and lessons of fatherhood. His perspective on finding balance and meaning offers a thoughtful reminder of what truly matters.

The end of 2024 offers a moment to reflect on the journey we’ve shared across yet another year. This has been a year of growth, discovery and creativity, made all the more rewarding by you—our loyal readers. Your continued support has been the foundation of everything we do, and it’s because of you that we proudly close the year on such a high note.
In this December/January issue, we
have Axel Matthew on the cover. A first-time cover star but no stranger to DAMAN, Axel represents the strength and creativity of Indonesian talent. And all the way from the U.S, we have seasoned actor Ian Bohen, who shares his perspective on navigating Hollywood, and Sullivan Jones, whose impactful storytelling continues to resonate for many who follow his work on TV and the silver screen. From Milan, we have Hungarian model Balint Ikladi, a rising model who shared with us his passion for both style and music. Each of these stories reflect the spirit of determination and reinvention, a perfect note to close the year on.

Almost exactly 10 years ago, DAMAN featured American actor Ryan Guzman on the cover. At the time, he was still relatively new to the game, but had already made quite a name for himself with his performances in two of the “Step Up” movies. Fast forward to today—from June/July 2014 to October/November 2024 if you want to keep track—and when we caught up with Guzman again, we found an established, mature and much more successful actor. And one who has also continued to use his platform to inspire others.
Of course, we expected nothing less from a talented artist like him, but it’s still nice, and incredibly rewarding, to see how far the profiles we feature in this magazine have moved on in life when we get the chance to reconnect.

As the world—well, the Northern Hemisphere, at least—transitions from the warm summer to a crisp fall, we’re excited to explore the fresh styles and inspirations that the new fashion season—which applies to the whole world—brings. For this edition of DAMAN, we’re thrilled to present two cover variants, one featuring Indonesian actor and entrepreneur Keanu Campora who brings with him the vibrant energy from sunny Bali, and the second with prominent model Stefano Tomadini, embodying the timeless elegance of Sardinia, Italy. The rest of our fashion features will then take you from the streets of Paris to a laidback stroll in Los Angeles, as we showcase the latest trends in global
fashion. And not just that, from the heart of London, we catch up with actor Jack Parr, who tells us about his most recent films and projects beyond the screen.

With summer now in full swing, I would like to welcome you to explore the vibrant energy and endless possibilities that this season brings, through DAMAN’s June/July 2024 issue. In this edition, we have curated—as we always do—exclusive fashion stories and profile highlights from around the world, each offering unique insights on our world. And, I hope, they will also provide a measure of inspiration. First up, we are thrilled to present an exclusive shoot with model Elia Comett, set against Sardinia’s coastal beauty. From New York, we bring you Daniils Dmitrijevs in a series of images that really embodies the city’s spirit. Meanwhile, from Los Angeles, actor Niko Terho and TikTok sensation Carrington Bornstein add their charm to our pages.

Turning 17 is usually seen as significant transition that can profoundly influence the trajectory of a person’s life. Reaching this milestone age usually comes with a need for introspection and self-discovery, as one starts to question their beliefs and values, while exploring who they are and who they want to be. In DAMAN’s case, however, our identity and vision has been clear from the outset. Since day one, we have known who we are and what we stand for. And to be here today, as the leading men’s magazine in Indonesia feels extremely rewarding. Our journey has been defined by an unrelenting  dedication to our vision, and our continued success is testament to the passion of the people behind the title. And, of course, all of this would have been possible without our loyal readers who have been with us for so many years, all of you new readers who saw something in us, our advertising partners who continue to trust us and our creative collaborators who allow us to do our best. All of you have my sincerest gratitude.

With spirited enthusiasm, we kick off DAMAN’s  February/March 2024 edition while riding the wave of fresh beginnings that have gotten us to a rather great start this year. As we embrace this new 2024 energy, I believe that this magazine will—as always— become a canvas on which we paint stories that will define style and the essence of contemporary urban living. On the cover of this issue, we have a longtime friend of the magazine and a former winner of our annual Rising Star 
PUBLISHER’S NOTE award. It’s none other than Jefri Nichol, who is back to captivate us with his
spellbinding charisma and tales of his latest endeavors. Once again, we got the chance to sit down with the young actor as he shares about his journey so far, his aspirations and the experiences that have shaped his trajectory in the entertainment biz. Without spoiling too much, I think it’s
safe to say that Nichol’s story at the start of 2024 offers us a reminder how resilience and passion are always the driving forces behind a rising star.

If you notice something slightly different on our cover and the first few pages up until this one, then trust your eyes—they haven’t deceived you. I am thrilled to announce that DA MAN has undergone a revamp starting this edition. We’ve carefully crafted subtle changes throughout the magazine to ensure that our readers will enjoy a new and enhanced experience. Essentially, I envision DA MAN as a continuously evolving platform that will deliver high-quality content, enriched with beautiful imagery and a contemporary layout. For this October/November issue, we have multi-hyphenate Al Ghazali gracing the cover in an exclusive collaboration with Louis Vuitton. We catch up with the talented actor and musician as he shares insights into his latest endeavors. But, of course, that’s not all; we also have Yoshi Sudarso in a special photoshoot with Under Armour. Be sure to read his story as he has a surprise in store for his Indonesian fans.

Now that we’re at the midpoint of yet another year, I think it’s the perfect time to take a moment to pause and contemplate on the journey that the magazine has undertaken so far. This year brought with it a long-awaited sense of liberation, as the world finally, truly breaks free after years of restraint. Travel and events are in full swing, and as my itinerary now includes more and more collection unveilings, brand showcases and even the odd conference, I can’t help but notice a newfound air of excitement surrounding them. Most importantly, however, DA MAN is more than ready to embrace this vibrancy and eager to see the what the rest of the year will bring.

Sometimes I surprise myself when I think about how there have been quite a few notable soccer athletes who eventually gravitate towards fashion. On several occasions, we had the chance to work with English footballer-turned-model John Halls; now we see Marc Klok on the first steps of his journey into the realm of fashion and lifestyle.  And at the same time, to highlight this mingling of sports and fashion for our June/July issue, we found the perfect partner to collaborate with: Hublot, the Swiss watchmaker known not only for its art of fusion, but also for its timeless support to the world of soccer. And it’s my absolute pleasure that DA MAN can provide the space to make the magic happen.  Of course, beyond our athletically fashionable cover, we have plenty of exciting content to share with you. With summer heating up, our pages come alive with sizzling fashion spreads, packed with sun-soaked styles to inspire you throughout the season. What’s more, we have special interviews with Hollywood stars Josh Dallas—which also marks a happy reunion with the actor—and Ty Simpkins. Meanwhile, from Indonesia, the up-and-coming actor, Bara Valentino is here to share about his life’s journey.

It is with great pleasure that I present to you DA MAN magazine’s 16th anniversary issue. In a way, this edition is testament to how our magazine has thrived over the years thanks to an unwavering commitment to quality and our drive to stay ahead of the curve. As Indonesia’s only home-grown men’s English language magazine, we are dedicated to bring you the latest in fashion and lifestyle trends and worked tirelessly to ensure that our content remains fresh, engaging and informative. Of course, that’s only half of the equation. DA MAN wouldn’t be where it is today without you: Our longtime supporters, new readers, advertising partners and creative collaborators. This is as much your celebrations as it is ours.  Speaking of which, to celebrate this momentous occasion, we have two special collectible covers. The first pays tribute to four legendary Indonesian actors who have been with us from the start: Jeremy Thomas, Marcellino Lefrandt, Surya Saputra and Ferry Salim. We sat down with the four gentlemen to reminisce and see what they’re up to now. Our second features multi-talented model Miles McMillan, as we delve into the life and career of this rising star in an exclusive interview and photo spread. And from Hollywood, we have actors Asher Angel and Gabriel Luna to give us the inside scoops on their latest big projects. Plus, we have a feature on Parker Gregory, giving us an inside look into the world of modelling.  Moving forward, we aim to continue being a force of innovation and an authoritative voice in everything from the worlds of men’s fashion and lifestyle. As we enter 2023, the magazine and I are thrilled to present our latest edition, which is a special, double-cover issue, no less. Whether you’re a long-time fan or new to the DAMAN family, I’m sure this issue has something that will suit your interests. We have none other than the global sensation Jimin from BTS and longtime friend of the magazine, British model John Halls, gracing the cover.  As one of the most influential figures in the entertainment industry, Jimin has made an incredible impact both in music and fashion. In this issue, we dive into the world of Jimin, as he takes on the role of Dior Men global ambassador after recently releasing his latest single. We explore the ways in which he has been able to break boundaries and pave his own path in the industry, and what it means for fans and aspiring artists alike. On other hand, we have exclusive interview with John Halls, a prominent male model and soon-to-be fashion designer as he prepares to launch his menswear line this year. Taking into account his unique perspective on the fashion industry, we delve into his journey and what inspired him to start his own label. Until a few years ago, one of the definite highlights of our calendar here at DAMAN magazine was, without doubt, the annual DAMAN Party. As our signature yearly event, it celebrates everything that the magazine stands for: The spirit of “making your own style” and really owning it, recognition for the foremost talents in entertainment and fashion—rising young stars and established maestros alike. We take all these and wrap it up in an evening of stylish fun. DAMAN And after a notably long absence, DAMAN Party has returned to Jakarta’s rebounding lifestyle scene. Perhaps a bit extra late in the year—November instead of the usual May—but definitely just in time to mark the upward trajectory of the magazine, the industries and artistic fields it covers, as well as our world at large. Most importantly, however, is the underlying current of optimism that encouraged us to organize the party, sparked anticipation for the day among our readers and fans, which then culminated in the exuberance and energy that came alive that night. And above all else, I think it really shows that our resolve that has allowed DAMAN to not only survive but actually thrive in the past couple of years, was finally vindicated. So, in this issue, you can find snippets of our 15th DAMAN Party—which you can find on our social media accounts and YouTube channel as well. On top of that, we naturally have plenty of other exciting features as well, from catching up with Richard Kyle in the Land Down Under, our chat with Tony Revolori of the “Spider-Man” films and “The Grand Budapest Hotel” fame and so much more. One of the main hallmarks of DA MAN is how we try to highlight Indonesia’s ever-growing talent pool, especially promising actors, up and-coming musicians and enterprising figures who are actually making a difference. This issue is a bit unique, however. Among our feature stories, we have two very talented individuals—one of them has made it big on the global stage and is now focusing back on his original fans back home, the other has also found nationwide success and is now taking on Hollywood. The former, as you’ve probably guessed from seeing this magazine’s cover, is none other than Afgansyah “Afgan” Reza. In 2021, he shook the world with his voice and became a global sensation, producing an album in New York and working together with some of the biggest names in music from the United States and even South Korea. This year, however, was dedicated to his fans in Indonesia. Afgan was once again singing in Indonesian and performing live in Indonesia. On the other hand, we have Maxime Bouttier, a rising star in Indonesia’s film industry who has just taken his career to the next level with a major role in a major Hollywood production. He’s playing opposite George Clooney and Julia Roberts, no less. I would have liked to wrap up this part of this story with the usual “it doesn’t get any better than this” line, but I do believe that Maxime would likely accomplish even greater feats in the near future. It’s always gratifying to chronicle the journey of established talents finding new ways to go higher and rising talents making genuine breakthroughs. And I hope you these stories as enjoyable to read as it was for us to write. Happy reading...

When it comes to covering the ins and outs of fashion, most media outlets would relish any chance to pick the brain of acclaimed designers and creative directors or famous photographers and stylists. Models, however, are mostly seen but not heard. While that is, to be fair, the actual job description of a professional model, I think that there are so many untold stories from these faces of fashion stories that inspire, enlighten and entertain. So, for years, DAMAN has not only teamed up with models from all across the globe to showcase the latest fashion highlights, but also to talk with them, to learn more about their line of work and the inner workings of the fashion biz, all while trying to catch glimpses of what are some pretty extraordinary lives. We used to focus these stories in or biannual DAMAN Style special editions, but for a while now, we’ve continued this tradition in our regular issues as well. And for this August/September issue, we have quite the lineup. First up, we have a longtime friend of the magazine, Aurélien Muller, who is now as much a doting father as he is a top tier model. We also have a feature story starring industry veteran Clint Mauro, who we might see quite a bit more of in the future as he is set to return to acting as well. These two gents are highlighted on our two cover variants for this issue. Yes, there are two cover versions of our August/September 2022 issue ... so, collectors please take note. Furthermore, we also have a fashion story starring yet another seasoned veteran, Arnaud Lemaire. And rounding up our lineup this time around is fitness model Nick Topel, who is also a trainer with a very unique approach to wellness. Together with these four models, we’ve managed to create an impressive visual showcase—even if I do say so myself—that is further complemented by a series of intriguing stories that are, as I mentioned earlier, seldom told.

The world, it would seem, is actually returning to a semblance of normalcy. For real, this time. We’re starting to travel a lot more, staying outdoors with extra vigilance but at least without layers of anxiety clouding our view of the world and enjoying things like going to the cinema. Making it even better, we’re right at the beginning of summer. And while it’s only officially summer in the western hemisphere, it still means an abundance of new fashion drops, movie premieres, the school holidays, etc. As such, it seems only right that for this turn-of-the season issue of DAMAN, we highlight some new, rising talents as well. Basically, new names who are stepping up their games in a big way. From Indonesia’s very own movie industry we have actor, YouTuber and soccer-enthusiast Pangeran Lantang. From Hollywood we have Gavin Casalegno whose filmography includes hit series like “I Am... Gabriel” and epic movies like “Noah.” And from the world of fashion, we have up-and-coming pro model Hunter Warr who is also gracing our cover. I think it’s not too much of a stretch to say these are stories that many of us can relate to, as they speak of new beginnings and an upward trajectory whether it’s in life or work as the world opens up in a big way. If anything,  they’re certainly make for a fun—and hopefully inspiring read along with our usual updates from the world of fashion, travel, fine dining and everything in between. When I took the fateful decision to enter into the world of men’s lifestyle and fashion publication, there were at least seven other titles vying for the same space and audience.Fast forward to today, a good 15 years later, and DAMAN is the last title left standing in this category. And it’s going stronger than ever. As cliched as it might sound, I couldn’t have done it without you—our partners, our loyal readers and subscribers, and everybody who believed that DAMAN has something to offer to the world. It goes without saying the road up to this point hadn’t been and easy, but I like to believe that is exactly why DAMAN has grown so much since its inception. We started out as a simple, Indonesia-based title, but we had big plans, big ambitions. We quickly set up our L.A. office and scoured the world for contributors—from New York and London, to Paris, Singapore, Sydney and beyond. Our pages have been graced by some of Indonesia’s biggest names in both entertainment and fashion, as well as the rising stars of Hollywood, world-class designers and the most celebrated models from all the four fashion capitals. Even as DAMAN’s print editions grew stronger, our presence in the digital sphere also grew. For one, our dedicated website—daman.co.id—now hosts content from the magazine as well as exclusive online features, to say nothing of the videos we produce to accompany every edition. Today, more than a third of our online traffic come from outside of Indonesia, as we share our passion and craft with an increasingly global audience.  As DAMAN settles in its “teenage” years and sets its sight to the future, I can promise you that we will continue to be a foremost voice of trends and style, on both a national and global level.

Around the end of last year, a popular joke circulating on social media was how we were about to enter “twenty twenty too” featuring reruns of all the maladies that plagued us during the first year of the crisis. And sure, while the start of 2022 had its fair share of bad news, you simply can’t help be a bit bearish about the months to come. Or perhaps tiger-ish would be not too off the mark here. With New Year’s still fresh in our memories and Valentine’s just around the corner, we’re also entering the Year of the Tiger. On that note, it’s always interesting how various international fashion, watches and even gadget brands would join in the celebrations to welcome the New Lunar Year with thematic launches. Often limited, sometimes region-exclusive, always collectible. And for this edition, we had the opportunity to collaborate with arguably the most fitting brand for the occasion: Onitsuka Tiger. So, for this issue’s cover, we partnered up with the famous Japanese fashion label and also rising Indonesian star Randy Martin—who, as it happens, was born on a year of the tiger, too. At the same time, we’ve also caught up again with American actor Conor Donnally, whom we’ve last talked to back in 2019, and sat down for achat with Travis Van Winkle from the hit Neflix series “You.” On the fashion  side of things, we have quite a treat for you, including our curated selection of key looks of the season, snippets from the last spring/ summer collection by the late great Virgil Abloh and more. And before I invite you to turn the page and begin exploring our first edition of 2022, I wanted to take the opportunity to thank you—our readers and also our partners—for your continued support through these tough times, and also to wish you all the success, joy and happiness in the months to come. One of the joys—or perhaps I should say one of the privileges—of running a magazine like DA MAN is the opportunity to not only meet rising talents, but also the chance to see them evolve. Afgan, one of Indonesia’s best-known singers, first appeared in our magazine back in 2015. Then, he joined nine other leading male figures and DA MAN alumni in our special 10th anniversary  issue in 2017, followed by his second solo fashion spread and interview in 2019. Now, as he reaches amazing new heights in his musical career, Afgan is  back in DA MAN. On our cover, to be exact—and dare I say, it’s high time that we featured him front and center in this magazine. In a way, he’s set the benchmark for Indonesian talent who made it beyond the borders of this country. His musical talents are now recognized by the very musicians that inspired him in the first place, and he’s found not a niche, but solid footing in aposition that allows him to reach out to a universal audience while sticking to his roots as an Indonesian music icon. That we could partner up with Dior for this issue’s cover makes it that more special. Of course, it wouldn’t be a proper end-of-year edition of DA MAN without our usual spread of celebrity and fashion features. And even if I do say so myself, I’m confident that this issue doesn’t disappoint. From Hollywood we have exclusive interviews with Chris Diamantopoulos from the recent Netflix hit “Red Notice” and Ezekiel Goodman with stories about the latest adaptation of “I Know What You Did Last Summer.” We also have our usual convos with some of the best models in the industry, namely Arthur Sales and Ellis McCreadie, along with a number of inspirational—and aspirational— fashion features. And in closing, as I invite you to flip through the pages of this issue of DA MAN, I would also like to wish all of you happy holidays and a most joyful new year. 

While we were wrapping up this issue of DA MAN, awards season started. It was certainly exciting to see the Met Gala return to its former offline glory, along with the 2021 Emmy Awards, the opening gala for the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures, the Tony Awards, the MTV VMAs and the various international film festivals. As always, a big draw of those events is the red-carpet appearances, where what is worn can be just as important as who wears it. In short: The return of red-carpet events is a big win for fashion. As it so happens, our October/November 2021 edition also sees an  uptick of fashion features. We have our usual lineup of celebrities, of course, including the multi-talented Reeve Carney gracing our cover, Max Osinski with tales from “The Walking Dead” franchise, Jerome Kurnia representing local talent and more. But we have notably fashion spreads than our most recent issues, from a round-up of the season’s key looks to an exclusive presentation of Dior and Sacai’s collaborative collection. The fashion industry was one of the earliest to fully embrace the potential of digital platforms to work around the limitations we face today. But there’s only so much you can take away from a virtual fashion show or touring a virtual boutique. Working once again on rounding-up the best red carpet looks—please head over to our website and social media channels to see our top picks—and editing fashion shoots has given us a more palpable clue of the resurgence of fashion. And, hopefully, this is also a sign of an eventual return to normalcy. The past couple of months has been, let’s just say, eventful. And the scope 
of happenings that have defined this time period has been astonishing, to 
say the least. At one end of the spectrum, we have local lockdowns that 
have been extended multiple times, at the other we have the festivities and 
excitement of the Tokyo Olympics.

But perhaps it’s what’s in between that’s most encouraging. More and 
more people are getting vaccinated, countries—not all, but quite a few—are 
reopening their borders to travelers and in places where things have begun 
heading towards normalcy, offline events are starting to pop up here and 
there. Case in point: Our annual DA MAN Party resurfaces in Chicago. You 
can find glimpses of the celebrations in our similarly just-reopened Guest 
Book section.

Of course, the rest of the magazine is no less celebratory, as we delve 
into the happier side of life with a longtime friend of the magazine for this 
issue’s cover: Richard Kyle. This time he appears in a special collaborative 
fashion shoot with Louis Vuitton and shares inspiring stories from his 
professional and philanthropic adventures. 

We’re also delighted to share with you our discussion with American 
actor Rushi Kota about representation, a chat with model-turned-actorand-recently-certified-personal-trainer Jon 
Herrmann, as well as three exclusive fashion

Throughout the years, the DA MAN team has featured new and established stars from Hollywood, fresh talents and senior performers from Indonesia’s own movie industry, along with a slew of fashion designers, creative directors and other artistic headliners from the world of fashion. But one thing that I think sets this publication apart, is the appreciation we reserve for the models that appear in everything from our fashion spreads, watch highlights and even grooming stories.

Throughout the past 12 months or so, it has been really interesting to see how the fashion world coped with the challenges of a worldwide health crisis. In particular, it was both enlightening and encouraging to see how fast and how far the industry adapted. From luxury brands shifting their manufacturing capacities towards PPE production to creative directors arranging virtual runway shows with mind-blowing aesthetics or, on the flip side, crafting garments that resound with our newfound love for comfortable clothing.

First and foremost, I would like to wish you, our dear readers, a happy, prosperous and—perhaps most importantly—a hopeful 2021. It goes without saying that last year was hard for everyone, and all we could think of was how to survive, how to keep going. Today, I would say that many of us have started building up the courage to hope for—and to explore—new things.

While wrapping up this issue of DAMAN, I couldn’t help but look back at our journey for the past year. It would be an understatement to say that 2020 was challenging. I would like to think, however, that we managed to meet the challenges that came our way. And we even rose to the occasion when new opportunities arose. Case in point: Our continued collaboration with OPPO, which began in our previous October/November 2020 issue, to bring you fashion magazine-quality images, taken by a smartphone camera.

Last year, DAMAN collaborated for the first time with OPPO to create a fashion spread—a proper, professional fashion photoshoot—shot entirely with a smartphone camera. We used the then brand new OPPO Reno 10x Zoom. Naturally, we had our concerns as the project began in earnest, but the resulting images were simply incredible. If no one told you that it was shot using a phone, you wouldn’t have guessed it was.

The world is, arguably, not yet “back on track.” But for sure, DAMAN is back. We’ve never been completely gone, of course, and we’ve actually expanded quite a bit online; but more on that later. For now, you have in your hands a bona fide printed issue of DAMAN, and you can expect much of the same for the remainder of 2020 and beyond. Speaking of coming back, in this issue we’re also welcoming back a familiar face for our cover. Tom Ellis of “Lucifer” fame is here to share new insight into his popular TV series along with stories from his life during quarantine and his views on current events. Also sharing his worldview is American actor Nolan Gould. Other than that, we have stories from Henry Zaga who is set in the highly-anticipated superhero flick “The New Mutants,” news anchor Rory Asyari and—in what might become a regular feature in the magazine—acclaimed Filipino photographer Lope Navo. And plenty of other exciting stories and our usual helping of fashion photography in the pages to come.

Optimism in the face of adversity has always been one of humanity’s most powerful traits. And as the world faces one of the worst pandemics in ages, it is a good time to maintain a healthy amount of optimism. This storm, too, shall pass. In the meantime, we simply have to learn to cope. For instance, Scottish actor Sam Heughan, this issue’s cover boy, is currently stuck in the U.S., but remains busy juggling various projects. In a surprising twist, what really resonated with me was chat talk with Santiago Carbrera about his involvement in “Star Trek: Picard.” So, here we have a well-established setting with a very familiar premise, an incredibly loyal fanbase and top-notch talent. Yet, as Carbrera pointed out, the new show is “a true departure and new beginning in so many ways.” In a way, it boldly goes where no “Star Trek” show has gone before.
