In this edition, Nomad Africa Magazine’s Bruce Germaine had an exclusive interview with Salad Nthenda, who is the Vice Consul Tourism, Malawian Consulate-General. Salad highlights the major tourist attractions and what makes Malawi a unique destination for tourists, challenges and strategies the Malawian government has deployed to improve on tourism in Malawi. 
The core focus and purpose of publishing Nomad Africa Magazine is to dispel negative views and misconceptions regarding Africa through its positive features showcasing the diversity and rich opportunities available.

Rethinking Indigeneity

Cultural heritage is one of the most pervasive tourism assets worldwide and lies at the foundations of tourism in many localities, including Africa. However, despite its salience, there has not been a systematic examination of Africa’s heritage resources, markets, policies, practices, successes, and challenges in a tourism framework, despite the continent’s immense heritage value. There is an increasing potential for the growth of cultural tourism throughout the entire continent of Africa and the way in which they have together become major drivers of destination attractiveness and competitiveness.

In this edition, we show how a strong link between tourism and culture can be fostered to help African countries become more attractive to tourists, as well as increasing their competitiveness as locations which to live, visit, work and invest.

On page 13, we take a quick glance at Mozambique – a paradise with breath-taking tropical beaches. Khosi Ncube – a new addition to our editorial team, had lots of fun exploring the Maldives. It was an experience of a lifetime for her and she gave details into her seven days adventure on page 20. On page 26, Wendel Nolan highlights the disappearing side of Kenya. In a special feature by same Wendel, we delved into the bitter truth behind Madagascar’s Vanilla trade. Why is Nigeria considered an untapped destination? Check out more details on page 60.

As with any journey, we have experienced many highs and some inevitable lows in the long trek to becoming the present day Nomad Africa. Our aim is to continue with broadening our African footprint and positioning ourselves as a standard conscious media company that prides itself with contributing to the economic development of the African continent. This is a noble course which we can only achieve with your continuous support.

In this edition, we get to explore a new perspective on the way we travel. At what point do we draw the line when we visit a community, enter their homes and take pictures of them like we would an animal on safari? On page 64, we looked at both sides of the coin – “cultural immersion or poverty touting”.

Much focus has been on Airbnb’s ability to become a new kind of online travel agency and a major disrupter to the traditional hotel industry, especially after a recent announcement from Airbnb that bookings in Nigeria have increased by 213% as of June 2018, with Ghana and Mozambique coming in second and third, what does this mean for hoteliers in Africa? Should hoteliers feel threatened by this? Check out more details on page 50.

Mapaseka Sekgala – a new addition to our editorial team, had lots of fun exploring the Seychelles and Tsitsikamma. She bungee jumped from the world’s highest commercial bungee, giving details into her adventures on pages 20 and 35. In another special feature, Martin Chemhere, in his piece, looked at Ethiopia on the path to becoming the next China on page 62. Rwanda has rolled out the East African Community (EAC) electronic passport in an effort to boost faster border clearance. Check out more details on page 82.

We have added a few more segments to your favourite magazine as requested by you our readers. Our ultimate goal at Nomad Africa is to change the narrative of the world’s perception of the African continent, showcase to the world what the beautiful continent has got to offer and in so doing, encourage more Africans to explore their own continent. This is a noble course which we can only achieve with your continuous support.

This edition of the magazine presents us with an opportunity to deeply look into faith-based tourism and churches across the continent of Africa. Reports of pastors convincing worshipers to eat snakes, spraying insecticide into mouths of believers during fully packed sermons under the guise of God’s hand apparently, and even buildings that collapse due to poor structural engineering – there has been much strange activity, but no consequence. This makes us ask a single question; should churches not be regulated? (see page 76).
Lorraine Masemola – a new addition to our editorial team, attended the Domba traditional dance of magical Venda in South Africa. This colourful python dance, held annually at a very sacred site, Lake Fundudzi, secures good rain for the following season (page 52). In another special feature, Martin Chemhere, in his piece, updates us on South Africa’s newly relaxed visa regulations. Will it significantly help boost tourism in that country? 
 (page 62).
To this extent, I will like to say that I am delighted to work with the talented team here at Nomad Africa as I assume the position as the new Managing Editor. It was a daunting idea to build something new in travel journalism - something brave, bold and exceptionally beautiful. Africa’s future is an open road and we’re picking up speed, so it is the perfect time to be joining.

This special freedom edition of Nomad Africa magazine presents us with an opportunity to celebrate the lives and times of the heroes of our national liberation struggles, an opportunity to reflect upon and reaffirm the intrinsic roots of our nation and the continuing relevance for nation building and social cohesion.

In this edition, Christine Siamanta Kinori invites our readers to meet the Turkana tribe – one of the 42 tribes in East Africa that has managed to stick to their undiluted way of life. The tribe have survived natural calamities, modernization and have still remained strong (see page 42). In another special feature, the population in African cities have been predicted to double by year 2015 (page 46). 

As we celebrate Nelson Mandela’s 100 years anniversary with this special edition, we believe that if we apply Nelson’s humility, tact and penchant for dialogue, we can face the challenges that threaten Africa as a continent.

Recently, African countries took the first major step towards cheaper continental flights and opening the continent’s skies almost three decades after it was first proposed. On January 28th 2018, twenty-three African countries launched the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM) initiative by the African Union (AU). An immediate benefit of the SAATM will be enhanced connectivity between African nations and a reduction in flight ticket prices. The bigger picture is the promise of job creation, improved intra-African trade and freer movement of people. However, some experts are still very pessimistic about the idea. A few experts believe that SAATM will lead to the supremacy of African skies by a few, already dominant African airlines since most African countries do not have enough financial resources to capitalise their airlines.

Martin Chemhere in his opinion believes that the Zimbabwe aerospace industry is a promise to huge prospects especially after a change of government in the country (see page 52) and in another update from Kigali, RwandAir recently commenced flights to Abuja in Nigeria and Cape Town in South Africa. Bringing the total destinations of the airline to twenty-six.

In this edition, Kate Webster – a new addition to our editorial team treks into the forest to spend time with both gorillas and the Batwa Pygmy people of Bwindi – the original people of the Uganda’s Bwindi National Park’s rainforest (see page 34).

Africa as one of the most diverse continents on the planet has it all; vast deserts, lush jungles and tropical paradise islands. Sadly for many countries, mainstream tourism is still off-putting from all the red-tape. Many people regularly visit popular places like Egypt, Morocco and South Africa but with no idea of the least-visited places. Find out more on this subject with Matt Baron in his piece on page 12.

Ecotourism is everywhere lately, but have you ever stopped to think about why it is important? Simply put, ecotourism is important for two reasons. It creates effective economic incentives for the conservation of both biological and cultural diversity and heritage, while at the same time empowering communities to fight poverty with economic development and work toward sustainable development locally, regionally and nationally.
In this edition, Christine Siamanta wrote a very touching story about the ancient cultural practice of female genital mutilation in Kenya, East Africa (see “Wounds that won’t heal”, Page 28). In Uganda, another part of East Africa, one of our expert contributors; Rebecca Rwakabukoza, wrote an interesting piece on how the country can improve on its tourism offerings to attract Chinese tourists.
Humans are the biggest threat to wildlife in any region of the world (see page 95). But human encroachment on habitats and migration routes is not the only way we are facing off with wildlife. Humans are also actively wiping out iconic species like the elephant, lion and rhino by turning them into commodities. It is therefore our ultimate responsibility to protect threatened species and continue to educate local audiences on the real cost of ivory and rhino horn while debunking the social and cultural values behind their use in a modern world.
At Nomad Africa, conservation is at the core of our corporate social responsibility. We will continuously use our unique media platforms to educate our audience on this very important subject. Conservation is about everything we do and when we say that, we really do mean it and are not just “Greenwashing”

Africa is home to some of the fastest-growing economies, and revenues from tourism in Africa already represent more than double the amount of donor aid. Tourism is one of the Africa’s most promising sectors in terms of development and while Africa accounts for 15% of the world population, it receives only about 3% of world tourism. In the previous year, Africa received 56 million international tourists up from 26 million in 2000. International tourism receipts amount to US$ 36 billion or 7% of all exports in the continent.
In this edition, we take an in-depth look at tourism across different regions of Africa. How can Africa fully tap into its massive tourism potential? In addition, we did a special focus on Africa’s solar powered future and renewable energy, are investors keen?

In the past ten years, African countries have experienced unprecedented growth rates, with seven of the top ten fastest growing economies in the world being those of key African countries this year. 
In this edition, Nomad Africa Magazine’s executive editor – Heather Balouza was invited by Xolani Zwane, a traditional healer, to his wife’s homecoming ceremony, after which, she would be integrated in to her Zulu culture as a fully recognised traditional healer. Traditional healing has been around since the start of mankind and is practiced in various forms across Africa. However, the question is how effective is African traditional medicine?

The current most newsworthy villainous items in world news, present in Africa causing us immeasurable negative publicity are: ‘Refugees’ and ‘Corruption’.
 Our Magazine however, is only about Africa, and we mostly concentrate on the positive sides as we celebrate the great continent of Africa. 
This edition is dedicated to the ‘Scramble for Africa, 130 years ago’, therefore those two nouns, ‘Refugees and Corruption’ are not the subject of this article. 
In this edition, Nomad Africa Magazine’s Elaine Porteous looked at rolling out professional procurement in Africa and also checked in a separate article if the African banking sector is moving along with the flow. Nomad Africa magazine is therefore continuously looking out for partners and investors from across the globe. This way we will unite to amplify the true pan-African story.

Voor Magzter was hij President van Dot Com Infoway (DCI) en Galatta Media. We verzoeken je om klachten over verwerpelijke inhoud per e-mail naar de klachtenfunctionaris te sturen op het hierboven vermelde e-mailadres. We verzoeken u ook om de volgende gegevens te verstrekken wanneer u een klacht indient:
