We’re leaving on a jet plane, don’t know when we’ll be back again” – this was what I was singing to my two Pugs on the way to the kennels before they were due to fly to New Zealand.
To be honest, they looked rather more taken aback by my out of -key yodeling, interspersed with snivelling, but otherwise non-fussed. I, on the other hand, was a wreck. You see, these two intrepid pioneers, Fergus and Winnie, are also senior citizens (Fergus 12, and Winnie 11). Winnie and Fergus are both from Pug Rescue SA, and we adopted them 10 years ago. I’d always wanted Pugs, and after we married, Thinus fulfilled my lifelong dream and took me off to see Cheryl and Malcom. We’ve never forgotten that day and sometimes have a good laugh at how like deer in the headlights we were when we took Winnie and Fergus home. These two are part of our family and have seen us through so much, so when we had the opportunity to emigrate, there was no question that they’d be coming with us.
