<div style="page-break-before:always; page-break-after:always"><p id="1">Desiree investigated approximately 10 different platforms, finally settling on an out-of-the-box contest platform that could be customized to support an online cat competition. The program was not custom written for CFA and has its own unique approaches to the entry process, judging, and scoring. It is important to point out that there was never any intention to try to duplicate the experience and features of a traditional, in-person show. But there was definite potential for a popular and potentially profitable online event and the CFA Board elected to experiment with it. Meanwhile, with shows cancelled across the country and the likelihood that shows would have to be spectator-free when they eventually returned, online competitions began to crop up. Having heard about the new platform, New England Meow Outfit, Inc. (better known as NEMO) volunteered to test it by holding the first Virtual Cat Competition. Their goal was simple; to raise enough money to support an exhibitor only show in an area of the country where show halls are particularly expensive. They planned an online event that would feature four judging classes and four &ldquo;fun&rdquo; classes, where the winners were to be determined by Spectators&rsquo; Choice voting. A Best of the Best ring, modeled after the International, would determine the overall Best in Show cat.</p><div style="page-break-before:always; page-break-after:always"><p id="1">However, it&rsquo;s fair to say that the NEMO team had no real idea what they were getting themselves into. Since this was not an official CFA show, there was no central communications point to keep people informed. A flyer was created, but there was no place to post it. So, the club resorted to an aggressive Facebook marketing campaign designed by Mike Altschul and Wendy Carson. The response was overwhelming; 650 entries arrived in approximately two and a half weeks. The team then had the task of assigning judging numbers to those entries and setting up an environment for judging to take place. The final customizations requested by Desiree were still being implemented during the course of the competition, which sometimes affected the functionality of the site&mdash;not an unheard of situation during a beta test, but something of a challenge when you are trying to run a competition. Nevertheless, although fine-tuning of the judging system delayed the start of judging for two days, the competition concluded on time! As promised, the first three finals, PowerPoint videos with commentary from the judges, were posted Saturday, September 12, with the remainder following on Sunday the 13th. The Best of the Best video was posted Sunday evening.</p><p><img src="https://magarticles.magzter.com/articles/5318/530977/5f913c2b8273c/1603353598524.jpg"" owidth=578 oheight=326" style="width: 578px; height: 326px;" /> </p><div style="page-break-before:always; page-break-after:always"><p id="1">While the exhibitors and online spectators awaited the results of the judging, they could check out the online gallery of entries and vote for their favorites in the four &ldquo;fun&rdquo; classes&mdash;Tiny Tots, Best Buddies, Rainbow Bridge, and the club&rsquo;s own Cat and-Owner Costume Contest. Votes were $1 each. Midway through the voting, the club realized they were going to exceed their fundraising target and opted to allocate a substantial portion of the vote money to the CFA Breeders Assistance program. When announced, this planned donation sparked additional generosity and enthusiasm for the voting public.</p><p id="2">Now the event is over and Desiree&rsquo;s vision has become a successful reality. Although they cannot say that it was smooth sailing throughout, the NEMO team does state loud and clear that their Virtual Cat Competition ended up being far more profitable than had ever been expected. Which means they will most likely want to do it again!</p>
