Indigenous leaf crops such as African spinach (amaranthus, morogo or imfino) are rarely found in the commercial market but they can easily be grown in your nursery. Here are tips on how to do this.
Select a site with good-quality soil, close to a water source, to irrigate your nursery. If shade is unavailable, create your own to protect the young seedlings from direct exposure to the sun. Use shade cloth, hessian or old grain bags.
Soil preparation and planting
Prepare the soil well, making a fine seedbed. Regularly add organic material, particularly compost, to improve soil fertility and create a loose and stable crumb structure. Hard or compacted soil can suppress seed germination.
