Piggy French on the nervy mare who has gloriously proved her wrong.

Vanir Kamira

“SHE’s a funny little thing,” says Piggy French affectionately. She isn’t talking about a young, novice horse — this is the 2019 Badminton winner and Burghley runner-up, Vanir Kamira (Tilly).

Piggy may have taken over the ride on Tilly from Paul Tapner in 2017, but she’s known her since starting the mare’s eventing career back in 2012. Due to lack of space at Piggy’s then-base, the “brave but extremely weak and downhill” Tilly went to Izzy Taylor for a season and then to Paul Tapner, who produced her to CCI5*.

I’ve hunted all my life. Growing up, I hunted with the Cotswold and VWH and I’m lucky to have been out with lots of packs, from the Teme Valley in Wales where I learnt the name of almost every hound, to days out with the Beaufort with a field of 200-plus. My greatest moments have been following my best friends over Ledbury hedges. Eventually, I focused on eventing – I did juniors and under-21s. Then I got a four-year-old, Bertie, and took him up to what would be four-star today.
