On a sprawling acre of land in south Kolkata, a century-old home built in the Art Deco style houses the best of modern Indian art
ARSHIA DHAR
RAJIV SAINI

The main living room houses a mix of furniture, a lot of it custom-made by Alexander Lamont. The table on the right is clad in stingray skin, while the one on the left is in bronze with a parchment surface. The red carpet—28 feet long—was custom-made by Jaipur Rugs. The grand artwork in the background is by Akbar Padamsee.

The main living room leads into this intimate sitting area nestled within an alcove. The tables were custom-made in bronze by Alexander Lamont; the identical sofas are from Flexform, while the rich blue carpet was custom-made by Jaipur Rugs. The paintings in the background are by N.S. Bendre.

The black portoro marble on the floor and the shape of the stairway are original to the century-old home. The collection of paintings is by Ganesh Pyne.

The imposing red head of a lady by Ravinder Reddy has been installed at the flat end of the C-curve of the residence, with her ornamented bun facing the lawn. The paintings above the bronze consoles are by Atul Dodiya. High ceilings and stone skirtings mark the uniqueness of the passages and corridors.

A cluster of Arpita Singh paintings graces a wall of this dining room that overlooks a veranda on the right, which hosts a collection of Indian miniature paintings. The tabletop is clad in cast bronze; the lights above it are from Apparatus Studio. Beyond the veranda lies a pool outside.
