New mirrorless and superzoom models arrive alongside the GH5 at CES 2017
A long side the video-centric Gh5, Panasonic has used this year’s Consumer electronics show in Las Vegas to add two more junior models to the Lumix portfolio.
Billed as the “ultimate high performance compact mirrorless camera”, the Lumix GX850 (known as the GX800 outside the Us) arrives with a 180-degree tilting touch screen, and is unashamedly targeted towards those who like to capture selfies – indeed, alongside 4K video and 4K Photo options, it has the distinction of being the first Lumix model to offer a new 4K Selfie option.
Another focus for the model is panoramic shooting, and Panasonic has even made it possible to capture these when the screen is flipped up for selfies. another new addition is the Background Control mode, which lets you determine whether you want to capture sharp or defocused backgrounds, without resorting to manually changing the aperture.
Creative options
The model misses out on the latest generation 20.3MP Micro Four thirds sensors seen in the Gh5 and G80, although the 16MP alternative offered in their place is understandable given the target audience. the camera does at least omit an optical low-pass filter to enable the capture of fine details. wi-Fi is on board, as are Focus stacking and Post Focus options, and myriad Creative Control and Photo style options. there’s also a new Venus processing engine, as well as Depth From Defocus (DFD) aF technology that promises to bring subjects into focus in as little as 0.07 sec.
